Our Perfect Wedding

Words do not describe how wonderfully perfect our wedding turned out to be.  It was held December 29, 2012 at the Fort Belvoir Officers' Club in Fort Belvoir, VA.  Everything didn't go as planned, but it didn't matter.  Our friends and family were all there, we had plenty of food, and we had fantastic music to keep everyone entertained.  I'll spare the details and let you see for yourselves :)  All photo credit to Kristi Odom Photography.  Please consult her if you are interested in purchasing a photo you see on this website.  All photos are owned by myself and Kristi, and may not be reproduced.  Thank you!

Our Amazing Wedding Vendors

It is now so strange to stop and think about the insanity of the past year.  It feels like yesterday that Nathan and I were communicating on Skype while he sat in a bunker in Afghanistan- talking about how much I would love to visit Hawaii and hearing about his wonderful family in Charlottesville.  I was never one for cliche's and never one to believe in that "moment" when you meet the person you are going to spend the rest of your life with.  Until I met Nathan.  You could say we met through mutual friends, or at a bar (Hunan's in Clarendon!), or online, or in a dream... but all I can say is the moment I first saw him I leapt into his arms and it was all over, butterflies and everything.  Long story short: we fell in love, met the parents, got engaged, and had the most spectacular, amazing, more-than-we-could-ever-ask-for wedding ("and we all lived happily ever after...").

Total Spent: Too Much :)

I will warn you now, this entry is going to be a long one!

I want to start all this by pointing out the most talented group of vendors a bride could possibly ask for, which is what my event planner called "The Dream Team."  They never missed a beat and pulled our great party together in five months (July to December)... It can be done!

WEDDING PLANNER - Events in the City DC - Laura Ritchie
Laura Ritchie is AMAZING.  She gets down to the nitty gritty details and always knows exactly what she's talking about.  She was the first planner I interviewed, and knew from the moment she arrived she was the planner for this wedding.  She is young and excited about being spunky with details, but keeps it traditional when it matters.  She had some fantastic ideas for everything, and I was so lucky to have her help!  On the day of the wedding, she coordinated absolutely everything, including truck decorations and final clean-up.

VENUE & CATERING - Fort Belvoir Officers' Club - Trinetta
The Fort Belvoir Officers' Club was a perfect venue for our military-themed wedding.  We had heard quite a bit of complaints from other brides about getting in touch with the Club, but we had a very active wedding planner to solve that problem!  Trinetta was our main contact, and we stuck with her for the details.  At one point about two weeks out from the wedding we were contacted by another staff member who said we had not decided what food we were going to have at the wedding, but once we had spoken to Trinetta we were able to smooth it out.  Advice - stick with Trinetta.  She knows what she's doing.

PHOTOGRAPHER - Kristi Odom Photography - Kristi Odom
Kristi is the most talented photographer and I was so extremely lucky to have her photograph the wedding.  She was there the entire day, took family photos, artsy photos, and generally gorgeous bride/groom photos.  I have heard through the grapevine she is going to pursue wildlife photography, and as sad as I am to hear she won't be doing many weddings I am so incredibly excited for her!!  Every photograph in this entry is a photograph taken by Kristi.  Please do not disrespect her amazing photography!  If you would like a copy of a photo you see on this website, you can contact Kristi directly to discuss.

HAIR & MAKEUP - Hair and Makeup Artistry by Claudine - Claudine Fay
Claudine Fay is a truly wonderful hair stylist and makeup artist.  She was on the wedding planner's "Dream Team" list, and was easy to set up an appointment for a trial.  The trial consisted of a complete updo and makeup, and pictures to remember the style.  Four months later she was at the wedding venue at 8:30am ready to work with an assistant to do the bridesmaids' makeup.  Her styling is gorgeous and I was getting comments all night about how beautiful my hair and makeup was!  She's quick, detailed, and doesn't overdo it with makeup, just keeps it very natural.  I would use her again in a heartbeat.  My bridesmaids loved her, too!

MY DRESS & ACCESSORIES - David's Bridal Springfield
Mom and I went in to David's Bridal a week after I had become engaged to get some ideas before we went to look at a bigger designer.  I had tried on a gorgeous dress, but we just didn't love it, so I just kept trying on more.  There was a girl next to me with her posse showing them the finalist dresses she had already tried on before, and then she tried this one dress on that blew everyone away.  Mom and I looked at each other, and when she took it off we stole it from her dressing room to try on!!  We loved it, and bought it that day.

FLORIST - Brookhill Florist - Noelle van der Eijk and Mike Lucas
Mike and Noelle are like flower gurus.  They create the most beautiful and unique flower arrangements!  They were on the vendor list from Fort Belvoir, but were also recommended by the wedding planner, so I knew we had to use them (plus, we got a discount from the Officers' Club!).  We had a pre-wedding appointment to decide the arrangements, and Mike was very helpful in telling us which flowers would be in season for our December wedding.  We decided on roses, dusty miller, amaryllis, alstroemeria, posies, hydrangea, stock, and winter kale.  It was all absolutely gorgeous.

DJ & LIGHTING - Premier DJ Services - Dan Huynh
Dan was an absolute HIT at our wedding.  He was playing old-school tunes, modern tunes, alternative, country, and top hits, with no stall.  Everyone was on the dance floor at one point (even my grandmother!) and I was getting comments days after the wedding about what a fun DJ he was.  Before the wedding, I handed him a "must play," "likes," and "do not play" list, and he created his own playlist from my suggestions.  It was perfect.  My dad decided to write a song for our father/daughter dance, and sent it to Dan to upload the day before the wedding, which turned out to be a wonderful surprise for me.  I would recommend him for any wedding in a second.

The songs we chose were:
First Dance: "I Won't Give Up" - Jason Mraz
Father/Daughter Dance: "The Dance" - Chris Hardy
Mother/Son Dance: "I Hope You Dance" - Lee Anne Womack
Bouquet Toss: "Eye of the Tiger" - Survivor
Garter Toss: "Holding Out for a Hero" - Bonnie Taylor
Garter/Bouquet Winners: "Nothing is Gonna Stop Us Now" - Starship

Dan also did the lighting for us for both the ceremony and the reception.  He lit the columns of the ceremony with an amber glow, and switched out the lights for the reception to a very icy blue color.  It was perfect!

ORCHESTRA - Sage String Quartet - Kyung LeBlanc
Sage was a perfect addition to our ceremony.  We found out somewhat last minute that our church would not work out, so we had to adjust to hold the ceremony in the Officers' Club.  My wedding planner suggested Sage as an orchestra for background music, and I contacted Kyung to try and set something up.  They were extremely easy to set up, had a ton of song choices, and were very organized.  My brother-in-law was going to sing a solo, so we gave his contact information to Kyung and they were able to organize a practice session before the wedding.

The songs we selected were:
Intro: "Star Wars Throne Room"
Bride Walk: "Canon in D"
Unity Candle Solo: "You Raise Me Up"
Exit: "Don't Stop Believin'"

The wedding cake we received from Sweet Ladies was absolutely amazing.  We had seen the cake at a vendor show at the Fort Belvoir Officers' Club, and I knew that had to be the cake we chose.  Before the wedding we sat down for a tasting, and decided on layers of almond filling and red velvet filling.  Unfortunately the only time we had to taste the cake was during the cutting, so I wasn't able to taste how wonderful everyone said it was!! But the cake itself was beautiful and perfect and cut smoothly with the army sabre!

We also purchased a groom's cake from Sweet Ladies in the shape of my husband's Ford truck.  We went with the red velvet cake with chocolate frosting.  It was so detailed and he absolutely loved it, especially the words on the license plate.  It tasted delicious and soft like they had just made it the day before.

ESCORT CARDS & MENUS - District M Creative - Rachel Merkle
One day my wedding planner sent me an email with the subject: "AMAZING IDEA FOR THE DAY OF PAPER!!"  As excited as this subject made me, I had no idea how amazing her idea really was until they arrived at the wedding.  My planner worked with Rachel to design the most amazing escort cards, which were white ink etched on acrylic. They were SO neat!  They also designed some super pretty menu cards, which were gray ink on transparency paper attached to shimmery cardstock and a rhinestone at the top.  It WAS an amazing idea!

REHEARSAL DINNER - Houlihans
We had spent so much money on the actual wedding, we needed to find a place with good food for the right price.  Everywhere we looked in Alexandria was way too expensive, and we didn't want to go to a pizza place.  I happened upon Houlihans online so mom and I went in to talk with someone.  They promised us a menu of $20 per person and the back room, which was large enough to fit all 30 of us at two long parallel tables.  When we got there for the dinner, the back room was under renovation and we had been placed in a side room with tables everywhere.  Some of us ended up in booths and some at tables, which really separated people from the group.  The food was decent but nothing great, so I suppose you get what you pay for as far as dinners.  We were glad to have our own space in the restaurant.

INVITATIONS - Exclusively Weddings
After doing some shopping around and talking to previous brides, I realized that invitations can get ridiculously expensive.  The designer invitations I chose would have come out to about $1500, so when I ordered samples from Exclusively Weddings, I was relieved to find a similar quality for 1/8 of the price.  My planner said most people end up throwing away the invitations anyway, so as long as they were pretty and not too thin of quality they would be fine.  Unfortunately I didn't realize they would have to be put together until they arrived at my house, but we had a fun time putting them together with some wine and a few girl friends!

RENTALS - DC Rental
DC Rental was super easy to work with for all of our rental gear.  We chose two types of chairs, chivari cream with white cushions for the guest tables and ghost chairs for the bridal party table.  We also picked some really neat clear bubble chargers, and 3 different style linens for the tables.

MISCELLANEOUS
Since I didn't have a personal relationship with the following, I figured I would list them out rather than write a book about each one.  Just keep in mind I didn't have problems with any of the following vendors, so I have no complaints!

We Bought A Condo!

Big news today- Nathan and I purchased our very first home, a condo in the highly sought-after Clarendon 1021 building!

I convinced Nathan when he moved here to get an apartment in my dream building, the Market Commons in Clarendon.  After moving in to an apartment (#711) in September, he decided he loved the area.  It's only five minutes from his work, and would be a 15-minute metro ride to mine.  We started talking about our financial situation as a married couple, and were able to acquire a VA loan from his military status.  Our real-estate agent, Brittany Camacho, did an AWESOME job setting us up with a custom MRIS listing, which eventually led us to seeing this apartment the day it was listed, putting an offer down THAT NIGHT, and having it accepted over five other offers two days later!

Nathan was able to get out of the Market Commons lease, but it overlapped by a month with the new condo.  We both went in to sign the papers and done!  We are now the proud owners of a condo in Clarendon, Virginia.

Signed, "overly excited brand-new homeowner,"

Eric Church, a Pony Club Reunion, and War Horse

Busy weekend!  A few weeks ago I had bought tickets to see Eric Church in concert for Nathan's birthday.  He was coming to town, and Nathan kept talking about how he wanted to get tickets, but he shouldn't, but he wanted to, but he couldn't.  So, I did it for him.  We had the BEST time, and I would absolutely recommend a concert of his to friends!!  Justin Moore and Kip Moore opened for him, and then we danced along to "Creepin'," "Springsteen," and all the other CLASSICS.  Nathan ran in to some guys from the Old Guard, and I saw a girl I went to high school with.  It was a great time!

Saturday, I made my way out to Chinatown to meet up with some girls I rode with in the Difficult Run Pony Club.  We had a little reunion at Clyde's and wandered over to watch the Washington International Horse Show.  It was so great to see them again and all of us were just like the old days, like we had never separated!  The WIHS was a great venue for us horsey people, too :)

DRPC Reunion!

Sunday my parents had tickets for them, my brother and his girlfriend, and Nathan and I, to see "War Horse" at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.  I had seen the movie, but Nathan hadn't, so I knew he would like it.  We had dinner at the Center Rooftop restaurant, which was AMAZING.  Nathan learned to ask for black napkins instead of white, and I learned not to eat so much food before a play!  The actors were terrific, and they make the horses move so realistically.  I didn't know there would be loud gunshots and explosions during the play, but after the first couple I was less surprised for it!

Date Night Wednesday - Tandoori Nights

Nathan and I have been trying to keep up with a date night once a week, to avoid us getting too busy for each other and to explore the numerous restaurants around Arlington without spending a million dollars by eating out every night.

This week we used a Groupon for Tandoori Nights, which is a delicious Indian-inspired restaurant in the Market Commons Clarendon.  The Groupon was $20 for $40 worth of food and drink, which was the perfect amount for us.  Nathan got the chicken curry and I got some vegetable cheese curry, and we both really liked them.  Our total at the end of the night was $1.00!! I gave the guy a $10 tip.

The Cons:
- It's expensive.  Both of us eating an entree and one of us having a drink totaled $41.00.

- It's loud.  The restaurant itself is pretty loud and we were seated at a long table across from each other and in the middle of other couples, and we could not hear each other at all.

- Seating isn't level.  I was sitting in a booth and he was in a chair, and the booth was so low I had to practically sit on my own feet to see over the table.

The Pros:
 - It's delicious. My cheese/potato curry was good and Nathan's chicken curry was good (though he said it tasted a little bland)

 - Service is pretty good.  The guy kept asking us what we wanted, and we were so slow to decide he had to come back a few times!

 - It's convenient.  There's a parking garage right behind it and the Clarendon metro is three blocks away.

Overall, I would go back, but we like the Dehli Club down the street way better :)

Goodbye Elliott

It breaks my heart to let everyone know that Elliott (his show name was "Happenstance") passed away late last night at my family's farm in Boyce, Virginia.

Elliott was an absolute fighter until the very end, and I had to make the call to avoid future pain for him.

When we bought Elliott, I was in high school and recovering from trying to event Dublin, who would get me eliminated pretty much every event.  Elliott was being sold by T. Mansmann as an experienced eventer at a reduced price, because his x-rays showed some arthritis and fused hocks, which never caused a problem.  I absolutely fell in love with him.  During our first three events, the technical delegate approached me about "speed control," which I took seriously but it also felt a little funny to hear it after I had been riding Dublin!

We quickly moved from Novice to Training, at which point we qualified for the USPC National Championships and won the CDCTA Horse Trials with a 24%!  Elliott's dressage wasn't awesome, but he tried hard.  I could always see his eyes wandering during the test if there was a running cross country course behind the arena!

Once we had hit it big at training level, we moved up to Preliminary where we had a few "blips" (aka RIDER ERRORS) but did fairly well considering I was an amateur.  Unfortunately Elliott's feet were very difficult, and I was having a hard time keeping him sound for the move-up to Intermediate.  We decided he had earned somewhat of a retirement after he got me through my Pony Club "B" rating, and we began leasing him to other Pony Clubbers to get their ratings and some experience.

After a short while of lower-level competitions, Elliott began losing weight to the point of looking unhealthy.  We called the vet, who told us his kidneys were beginning to fail, and he most-likely only had a few months to a year left.  Immediately, we brought him home, put him on a low protein diet, and retired him for life.  Our hopes were to keep him happy and comfortable for as long as we could.

The vet came back for routine blood work, and after a while Elliott's levels evened out.  His kidneys had kicked back in and he was doing great!  We sent him to Millwood to enjoy his retirement, where he was taken care of daily by a woman named Lauren, who was also my very first riding instructor.  She loved him as much if not more than the rest of us, and his feed, treats, and turnout were catered specifically to what he liked :)  After a while, he started gaining weight back and looked like a real horse again!  The vet had to come out a few times for his random mishaps, but overall he was doing really well.

Elliott made it seven years from his initial diagnosis, which is almost unheard of with kidney failure.  On Thursday night, Lauren noticed he had an edema on his chest that was not getting better with time.  The vet came out once more, and gave us the option to take him to the vet hospital for the weekend to flush him with fluids to see if his kidneys would come back, but we knew it would stress him out being away from home and it was very expensive for a 21-year-old horse.  Lauren offered to stay with him, and we started him on fluids at home for 24 hours.

Friday afternoon mom had a meeting out there, so she was able to see him and check on him.  I grabbed Nathan and we trekked out during rush hour traffic to see him.  When I got there Elliott looked unexpectedly good for what his body was going through.  He was eating grass, acting like a horse, and had his ears up like everything was fine.  But when we hooked him back up to the IV, his body showed us he was not going to make it through this time.  I had to make the heartbreaking call, and we took out his IV and turned him out in the field to enjoy the rest of the night with his pasture-mate.  We were all devastated, but it was clear he was ready to go.

The vet was scheduled to come out in the morning, but when I woke this morning there was a text letting me know they had to call the vet to come out last night.  Apparently they had gone out to check on him and he had started to colic, so they did what was best.  Our vet said he went very peacefully, and then everyone saw a shooting star, which was so like him.  He always had to make a scene :)

Elliott will be missed dearly, as he was the one horse I ever felt truly confident on.  He carried me so many times when I made the wrong decision, and he never humbled me when I felt too proud.  In a lot of ways he was my best friend for a while, and my competition partner.  There will never be another horse like him, and I respect that.

Lots of love for you, Elliott.

Showers, Color, and Skins!

This past weekend was jam-packed.

Saturday Nathan, mom, and I drove down to Charlottesville for a wedding shower at his family's church.  We had a fabulous time, and everyone was so very generous to us!  It was a little hard, because I didn't know very many of the guests and Nathan has been away for so long that he didn't know them very well either, but we were so very appreciative of everyone coming to support a couple they didn't even know!  There was an amazing cake, games, a skit by the military wives of the church, and tons of food and gifts.  We came home with a car full of gifts and cake and cards from everyone, and we were so thankful.

"Before"
Sunday morning was The Color Run DC.  It took place at National Harbor in Fort Washington, MD, and consisted of thousands of runners (and non-runners) with the intention of becoming as colorful as possible by the end.

The run was supposed to start at 9am, but the waves ran in 3 minute increments and there were SO many people!  So we (a friend and I) started running at about 10am.  The course ran through the Harbor and consisted of four "color points," where there were volunteers prepped to cover you in a specific color.  Everyone who ran had to wear white shirts, so by the end of the run you were drenched in colored corn starch :)

After!

I thought it was so much fun, and it was even more fun since my work had put a "team" together.  Unfortunately it wasn't timed, so it wasn't officially a RACE, but my friend and I ran it anyway!  When we had finished the run, there was a huge mass of runners by a stage playing music, and every time a new song would come on everyone would throw color in the air.  By the time you could escape from the mass you were COMPLETELY drenched in colors!

Nathan and I had driven separately, so we left to search for some food before heading back to my parents to watch the Redskins absolutely PUMMEL the Saints, 40 to 32!!!!  I don't think I've ever seen the Redskins score 40 points in a game!!  Of course it was exciting, and I was able to finish my Thank You Notes from the wedding shower on Saturday and enjoy my mom's delicious game-day chicken chili.

Happy Monday!

Love,

Brittanie

Hawaii Take 2 (Oahu & Maui)

Much-delayed update from my second trip to the beautiful Hawaiian islands.  This time we ventured to Maui, which was a spectacular end to the week.  Beautiful scenery and nothing but sunny days, it was as to be expected.  Seeing Nathan was a nice perk, too!

Saturday, August 4

4AM wakeup for a 7AM flight.  WHY do I keep choosing these early flights?  This time I decided to drive, and parked in the economy lot at Dulles.  It costs $10/day, which (normally) would be cheaper than taking a cab (they're about $60 each way from my parents').  Settled in for the five hour flight from Dulles (IAD) to Los Angeles (LAX), but wasn't thrilled I had paid $40 for a "choice seat."  They had a promotion through American Airlines, so I upgraded to a seat in the front of the plane.  Unfortunately the seat I chose was in front of the economy seats, there was no basket for magazines, etc., and I never figured out how to use my tray table (it was in the arm) until the final 30 minutes of the trip.  All mistakes aside, I arrived at LAX with time to spare for my hour connection.  OR SO I THOUGHT.

Naturally, my second flight on United was delayed an hour, and then another hour, and before I knew it my 11am flight was now scheduled for 6pm.  After a measly lunch at the airport and a glass of wine for the angst, I re-approached the ticket counter to see what I could work out.  The delightfully UN helpful United representative hands me $20 worth of food vouchers (I had already eaten, remember?) and says they can do nothing.  So I left the airport, walked up to the United counter, and requested to be put on standby for a different flight, which was leaving at 5pm.  Now, I've never done standby before, so when they said I had to wait until everyone was boarded before I could find out whether I made the flight or not my nerves started.  Nathan was on his computer at home trying to figure things out, and I was spending a lot of time just praying I would make it.

Finally, they find out a mass of Asian tourists are stuck in customs, and my name is called.  Nathan is relieved, I am sitting in a prime seat in the exit row front aisle, and I am settled in for the five hour flight.  Made it!

Arrive to Honolulu and my luggage is no where to be seen.  Typical.  They say it will be delivered to me by 11pm, so I resign to wearing my sweatpants and t-shirt for the rest of the evening.  Nathan picks me up and we head in to town for some easy dinner at Gordon Biersch, and check in to the Honolulu Holiday Inn Waikiki Beachcomber Resort.  It's not on the beach and parking (valet only) is $30 a night, but it'll do.  Once we're settled we head out to meet up with some guys and play a few games of darts.  The crowd is fun, but I've been up since 4am, so we grab a late night snack at Denny's and grab my luggage from the desk before passing out.

Sunday, August 5

Wake up Sunday, grab some breakfast at Dennys (again?!) and hit the Infinity Pool at the Sheraton, which is also honestly named "The Bro Tank".  It's a gorgeous day and the water is perfect.  We grab bean bag chairs and float around a few hours, grab a snack, and head out of Honolulu around noon (after stopping by the market, of course!).

After a long day in the pool, the AC in the truck is nice.  We head North toward Waimanalo, grab some groceries, and settle in a nice spot to camp overnight by the beach.  Nathan has rented a tent from the Fort, and we grill up some chicken and mushrooms, wander around the beach, then I am so exhausted I crash at 7pm.  Whoops!

Monday, August 6

10 hours later we wake up to head South to Waikiki, grab some gear and jump in the boat of Island Divers Hawaii.  30 minutes later we are 30 feet under water in scuba gear, swimming around pointing at fish and turtles everywhere.  Our instructors were awesome, the chat was quick, and we got to dive twice!  Someone told us the state charges $27,000 if you touch a turtle and they catch it on camera, so we avoided getting close to them!  Apparently they carry a lot of diseases.

Scuba diving is checked off the list, and we return to Waialua to pick up his sister and head back to the house.  We change clothes, cook up a meal, and sit out by the campfire for a few hours. I have sweet tan lines from my Ray Bans as a reminder of how awesome the day was.  We hit the sack around 9pm.

Tuesday, August 7

Nathan has to work early, so I make myself breakfast and do a little work from home myself.  He gets home early, and we grab bikes for a ride to Haleiwa, and an epic lunch of Haleiwa Thai.  We both get curry, and we both like each others.  After a little food-coma-induced shopping in Haleiwa, we set off on bikes up the North Shore to find a Starbucks. The ride is breath-taking, and LITERALLY breath TAKING, because there is a huge hill up the side of a mountain on a road with no sidewalk, and by the time we reach the top I am ready for an iced anything.  We indulge in some over-priced chai and cake pops, and head back down the mountain to Waimea Bay, where we take a relaxing swim in calm water.

Nathan's sister drives out to pick us up, and we head to Liuibuenos for some amazing fish tacos.  Nathan runs in to some friends there, and we eventually clamber out and back to the house.  Not quite ready to sleep yet, so we take a walk along the beach behind the house.  It is perfect.  Lots of packing to do, so we head back in for the night.

Wednesday, August 8

Wake up ridiculously early for a ridiculously early flight to Maui.  We get lost in the parking garage at Honolulu Airport and have to run through the airport to find the inter-island flights!  When we make it there, we grab a sandwich at the terminal and jump on a puddle-jumper for a 30 minute flight to Maui.  Once we get to Kahului airport, we grab some Starbucks (it's a trend) and make our way to the rental car building.  They are out of compacts, so we get a sweet Malibu, which turns out to not be the best rental on the island (more later).
The drive to the hotel is gorgeous and I am glad Nathan is driving so I can sightsee.  The entire way is alongside the ocean, which is a perfect blue and the air is 81 degrees.  Our hotel is in Lahaina, which is on the west shore of Maui in a more tourist-filled area.  The drive is about an hour from the airport.

We check in to the Kaanapali Beach Hotel and gush it up to try and get a little "discount" (fail), and eventually make out to the pool for a little R&R.  An hour passes, and then a few more, and we start feeling really hungry, so we wander out to a pizza place near the hotel, which is delicious (and a little less expensive!).  Post-pizza coma, we return to the hotel and crash around 9pm.

Thursday, August 9

Early wakeup and breakfast buffet at the hotel, and $50 later we are wondering if we had eaten or not.  Out to the beach for a little sun and a little swimming for Nathan, and back to the pool bar for some lunch.  A few hours later and it's time to head in to change for dinner.

We put on our "nice Hawaii clothes" and head to the Westin hotel, where we get in line for a legitimate luau.  It is SO much fun, and we are put at a table with one entire family who are hilarious and super interesting.  The waiter brings us plates of food and drinks and we are loving every second of the show.  Later I come to find out that a family had done a luau down the street and they had not had a "fire show", and we did, so it made us feel pretty awesome about the one we picked!

Exhausted and hot, we head back for some much-needed sleep!

Friday, August 10

Waking up in Maui is always nice, especially on days like today, a perfect 83 degrees.  We throw on some jeans, and make our way out towards the town of Hana, where we have an all-day plan of riding horses through the mountains to see a waterfall.

Our first stop is to a place they call "Grandma's" for a good reason.  The breakfast is absolutely delicious, and gets us nice and ready for the rest of the day.  We grab some sandwiches to pack for lunch, and head to  Maui Stables via the Southeast road of the island, which is mostly old lava fields.  There isn't much to see for a while, and I get a little car sick, so we drive slower and talk about how excited I am to see horses on my trip to Maui.  Never gets old :)

We make it to Maui Stables and are given our horses for the day - mine is named Waika, which is apparently some tribal Hawaiian song about a warrior.  I'm hoping this is good, but it's hard to tell.  The guides tell us about the horses, and how they were all rescued from an Equine Rescue League in California.  Then I feel bad about riding them up and down the steep mountain!

Our horses are fantastic, and the trail is muddy.  We scramble up the hill until we reach the top, where we dismount and walk up by foot to the edge of the treeline.  The edge overlooks this gorgeous forest, and out over in the distance there is a magnificent waterfall, probably 200 feet high.  According to our guide, Hawaiian men used to jump off the waterfall to test their manliness.  Of course, that tradition didn't last very long once they realized 49 out of 50 would die from it!

We re-mount the horses and head back down the mountain, which is slippery and a little scary, even for the most experienced riders.  Nathan's horse takes his time, and I can hear him behind me talking to him about being careful.  My cowboy!

We reach the farm and the guide lets us canter the horses up the hill.  Waika obviously loves this part, because she bolts up the hill and keeps her ears up the whole time.  You're welcome, Waika.  We eat lunch and jump in the car, and drive up the Eastern side of Maui to the road to Hana, and then up and around back to Kaanapali.  We stop once so I can drive, because the road is terrifyingly windy and on the edge of a cliff with wooden railings.  Now we are regretting getting the free upgrade on our car to this boat!  We make it back alive, and grab some poke for the road.  As usual, it is delicious.

Saturday, August 11

Wake up early to check out and make our way to the airport.  There is major traffic out of Kaanapali, and we forget to gas up the rental car, so we rush to a station nearby.  Drop off the rental car and literally run to the airport, and are stuck in the longest security line you've ever seen in your life.  Apparently a flight had been cancelled twice, and now all these people were coming back to catch the next flight out.  It was a mess.  Nathan snuck in front of some people near the gates, and we made our way through security.  Standing in line, we hear over the loudspeaker that my flight is canceled back to the mainland.  Nathan is on a different flight back to Oahu, so we talk to the flight attendants and secure a flight for me back to Oahu with him.  More time in Hawaii?  OK.... Make it back to Oahu, discuss my new flight plans with the United Airlines people (who canceled my flight in the first place) and they assure me my bags will be at Dulles when I get there.  Good news is I have a direct flight from Oahu to Virginia, so 10 hours will get me home.  Anna picks us up at the airport and we head to the mall for some dinner, yogurt, and shopping.  Back to the airport and the flight is on time, so I say my goodbyes and board for some good sleep.

Sunday August 12

Arrive in Dulles and my bags are nowhere to be seen.  Naturally.  I make my way back to my parents, where my luggage doesn't arrive for a week.  Apparently it sat at Dulles, and no one could find it. Never flying United again.

All-in-all, I love Hawaii!!

Aloha and Mahalo,
